The key idea is the component that interacts directly with radio waves in the air. An antenna does this by converting electrical signals into changing electromagnetic fields to radiate waves, and conversely converting incoming waves back into electrical signals for the radio to process. In other words, it’s the interface between the radio and the outside world, capable of both transmitting and receiving.

Inside radios, transistors act as switches or amplifiers to control and boost signals but aren’t themselves the means of sending or receiving energy from space. Amplifiers increase signal strength after energy has already been collected or generated, rather than connecting the radio to the air. Circuit diagrams are just drawings of the circuit layout and do not perform any energy exchange with radio waves.
